In the sea of Murud village, there is a fort called “Padmadurg” near Janjira. Siddhi’s nuisance in the “Janjira” fort was growing on the Konkan coast. To control Siddhi’s movement in the sea, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built the fort Kasa – Padmadurg on the turtle-shaped island of Casa in the sea of Murud. This fort was built by the Marathi Mavals to fight with Siddhi.

The History :-

In 1676, under the leadership of Moropant Pingale, the Maharaja launched an expedition to Janjira. In this operation, cannons were fired at Janjira from the platform but the expected result was not achieved. Then Moropant made a bold plan to climb Janjira. Lai Patil, the head of  SonKoli in Ashtagara, who works on the Padma Durga, accepted this formidable challenge. One night Lai Patil left Kasa – Padmadurg with 8-10 of his colleagues. Taking advantage of the darkness, he came from Padma Durga at the back of Janjira and dared to put rope ladders on the wall, but the time of Moropant and Patil did not match and the attempt failed; But seeing the courage he showed, Shivaji Maharaj honored Lai Patil with a palanquin; But Lai Patil politely refused the palanquin as it was of no use to the man roaming in the river.

From this, then Maharaj Ordes the Moropants to build a new ship and name it ‘Palkhi’ and hand it over to Lai Patil. Apart from this, the kings gave Lai Patils umbrellas, clothes, flags and surpatilaki . During the reign of Sambhaji Maharaj, Kasa – Padmadurg was in Swarajya. Even after the death of Sambhaji Maharaj, in 1680, this fort came under the control of Marathas.

About the Fort :-

There are two parts to the Padmadurg fort. A main fort and a fort in front of it. Padkot is largely extinct, but the fortifications of the main fort are still intact. In front of the main gate stands a large tower. The top of this bastion is like a blossoming lotus petal. That is why it is called “Padmadurg”.

A feature of the construction of this fort can be seen here. The ramparts are constructed of two stones filled with lime. The main fort can be reached by seeing the square well in Padkota, the cannon, the remains of  buildings. It takes four or five steps to enter the Mahadwara of  Padmadurga. Inside the door are porches for the guards. There is also a stairway to the fort. Remains of old and new buildings can be seen in the middle part. While there is salt water on all four sides, there are four tanks for fresh water inside. Janjira and Samrajgad forts are visible from the ramparts of this fort. Also, the shores of  Murud look great from here.

How to reach:

There is a road from Murud village to Rajapuri to reach Padmadurga. There is a village near the creek on this road and you can reach the fort from the shore. Spiders take boats to the fort to see the sea and the weather. The fort is under the control of the Navy. So need permission to go there.
