Amongst the famous stories, one is of the Bene Israels who left Israel and came to India approximately 2200 years ago. They settled in and around Alibag. Many people like Khatri, Pardeshi, even from recent country like Pakistan came here for trading and settled here. The Hingulja Temple near Chaul shows the evidence of such traditions. The Portuguese Christians also travelled here for trade & settled down whoes culture & tradition can also be seen here.

Buddhist monks also visited here & spread the religion and trade. The Buddhist connection to this region can be seen in the caves in Chaul and Kuda Mandad near Murud Janjira. Three Tourist destinations

Alibag, Murud-Janjira and Shrivardhan in Raigad district have been accorded ‘B’ category status. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday, 15 February 21. This decision has been taken by the state government to give importance to the development of these tourist destinations in Raigad district, which is close to Mumbai and Pune.
